2029 GMC Jimmy: Everything We Know About the SUV’s Return

What It Is

The Jimmy was one of GMC’s most recognizable nameplates, dating back to the 1970s, before being discontinued in 2001 after the rise of car-based crossover SUVs. But now, with buyers showing renewed interest in boxy, off-road-ready models, this is the perfect time for the Jimmy to return.

Rumblings about GM reviving the GMC Jimmy get loudest whenever a new body-on-frame (BOF) SUV makes an appearance. Last time, the volume rose after the 2020 launch of the Ford Bronco. They crescendoed again following the debut of the popular Hyundai Boulder concept at the 2026 New York auto show this year.

What makes the rumors different this time is we’re hearing similar positivity from insiders regarding the Jimmy’s return. We’ve tapped our sources and collective brainpower to compile everything we know about the 2029 GMC Jimmy, and included our artist’s illustrations of possible two- and four-door designs.

Why It Matters

SUVs are dominating the marketplace, and GMC has only the Hummer EV SUV and Yukon AT4 as its off-road-oriented SUVs. With Ford, Toyota, Lexus, and even Hyundai entering the space with cool-looking, boxy SUVs, this is GMC’s latest chance to grab a piece of the pie and revive a beloved nameplate at the same time. A modern Jimmy will also give GMC something more rugged and lifestyle-focused than the Terrain to slot below the Yukon.

That said, none of the rumors are definitive about how a new 2029 Jimmy will look. As we understand things, GM is considering two paths: modern or retro. To the former, we’ve heard it would draw heavily on GMC’s current crop of SUVs, the Acadia, Terrain, and Yukon. Think a modern, smooth, roundish look with creases and sculpting to imply toughness.

The retro path has more consistently appeared in rumors, which indicate a design that harkens back to the C/K full-size Jimmy of the 1960s and ’70s. With the popularity of the Bronco, the longstanding tradition of the Wrangler, and the latest Toyota Land Cruiser’s look, this wouldn’t be a poor choice. Even the Hyundai Boulder concept shows influence from vintage SUVs, with its square LED lights, trucklike features, and upright greenhouse.

It’s this second look that we asked our illustrator to riff on. We’d be happy if the production Jimmy looks even close to these, and includes similarly cool details like the old-school badge and contrast side stripes.

A retro-inspired style would move it closer to the Ford Bronco or Toyota Land Cruiser, as well, although GMC could also follow the Lexus playbook and offer more than one Jimmy flavor. In that case, one version could lean rugged and trail-focused, while another—Jimmy Denali!—could emphasize refinement and everyday usability.
