Sydney Airport, the busiest in the country, says it is rolling out the first of 50 new electric buses to replace its existing diesel-powered fleet, another important step in the airport’s transition to net zero for scope 1 and 2 by 2030.
The 50 new electric buses have been supplied by Australian electric vehicle manufacturer Bus & Coach International (BCI) and include 25 dual-control airfield apron buses and another 25 “Citirider” electric shuttle buses.
The Citirider buses boast up to 350 kilometres in range thanks to 422 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from CATL, powering a 350-kilowatt (kW) engine.
It appears from press photos that charging stations from HiCi have been chosen to recharge the buses, and these will be powered by contracts for 100 per cent renewable energy.
“The 50 new electric buses reduce our scope 1 emissions from our operations, with the bus being powered by 100 percent renewable through our power purchase agreement,” said Karen Tompkins, Sydney Airport group executive for government relations, sustainability, and legal.
“Importantly, they also improve the passenger experience by providing quieter, cleaner and more comfortable transport across the airport precinct.”
The buses all feature artwork by Shane Youngberry, a Dharawal artist, depicting the stories and culture of the Dharawal People of Coastal Sydney.

“The artwork named ‘Gamay’ featuring important sea creatures in Dharawal culture like the girawaa (stingray) and dhanj (fish) tells a story of pathways, connection, and community,” said Youngberry.
“Knowing this artwork will travel around the airport every day is something I’m proud of. It gives people from all over the world the chance to experience and connect with Dharawal culture as part of their journey.”
